As the swim season draws closer, we would like to give you a few helpful tips to help you save money and protect your pool.

Tip #1 – Change your settings so that your equipment runs during the day. If you have a 9 volt backup battery on your system now is the time to change it.

Tip #2 – Increase the amount of hours that your equipment is running.

Tip #3 – Increase your chlorine production on your salt cell or turn up your chlorine feeder as needed. If you are having issues with algae please contact us at the service department. Replace Nature2 cartridges at this time.

Tip #4 – If you have a Chlorine pool you will need to shock the pool at a ratio of 1lb per 10000 gallons. Do this once a month during the swim season in the evening hours. If you have a Salt water pool DO NOT SHOCK unless direct to do so by a service technician.

Tip #5 – Test your water chemistry regularly. Your Chemistry level should be maintained as follows: pH=7.2-7.6, Chlorine 1.0-3.0, Total Alkalinity 80-120ppm, Calcium 200-400ppm, Conditioner (CY) 40-80ppm and Salt between 2800-3800ppm.
*Note If you have a pool with aquaBRIGHT then your pool’s alkalinity needs to be between 120 and 150

Tip #6 – Continue to clean out skimmers, pump baskets, cleaner bags, filters and salt cells as needed. Check your Aquapure salt cell systems for errors. If the service light is on in the panel box then you have an error that needs to be addressed ASAP. Get the 3 digit code that will flash on the led screen when the service light is on before you call for service.

Tip #7 – How old is your chemistry test kit? Some of the chemicals in your test kit have a shelf life of only one year. If you need a need a new kit we have Taylor kits available.

Tip #8 – When was the last time you tuned up or rebuilt your cleaner? Cleaners need attention too! We recommend a tune up once a year and a rebuild every other year to keep your cleaner at its best.

Tip #9 – Seal your rock and coping. We use a water based natural stone sealer. If you have precast coping we do not recommend sealing it. If you have water features or flagstone coping it needs to be sealed at least once a year.

Tip #10 – If you have an ozone or UV unit and it is over 2 years old, the bulbs need to be changed to continue working properly.

Tip #11 – Inspect your cartridges or grids for wear or have us do it.  We stock them all and at a much better price than the other guys.

Tip #12 – Don’t have the time to maintain your pool? Let Puryear Custom Pools do it for you!

As the cold weather draws closer, we would like to give you a few helpful tips to help you save money and protect your pool against freezing temperatures.

Tip #1 – Make sure that your freeze protection is functioning properly on your pool. When the temperature is below 34 degrees, your pump should automatically come on. You can perform a test by spraying the temperature probe with a can of freeze spray.

Tip #2 – Reduce your chlorine production on your salt cell or turn down your chlorine feeder.

Tip #3 – Be sure to empty your skimmers and cleaner baskets more frequently as the leaves are falling off of the trees.

Tip #4 – Continue to clean out skimmers, cleaner baskets, filters and salt cells as needed. You also need to continue to test your pH and chlorine levels weekly. Even though you are not swimming, these things are still important to maintain.

Christmas is Almost Here!

It is a common belief that the best time to build a swimming pool is the beginning of spring.  Sure, if you get your contracts signed, your permits pulled and time it just perfectly your pool should be ready to use by Memorial Day Weekend. Since everyone chooses to start their backyard projects this time of year, it increases the entire construction process.  Permits take longer, subcontractors get bogged down on their scheduling creating longer construction times, and if Mother Nature gets involved with springtime showers, then rain delays can cause even longer completion times.  This is a basic example of supply and demand.  More demand leads to higher prices and longer wait times.

There are many benefits to building in the “off season”.  Since there isn’t quite the demand on the subcontractors, scheduling is more on target, stress during construction is less because you aren’t “under the wire” to finish for the big pool party you had planned and most importantly you save some money.  Less demand and the price goes down.  Imagine the construction of your pool being completed at the beginning of spring, allowing time for your landscaping to be completed and grow in before Memorial Day Weekend.  While your friends or neighbors are dealing with the hurry up and wait on their dream backyard, you can rest easy knowing all you have to worry about for summer planning is who to invite for your next party.

Your pool will be completed by spring and you save money!  Why haven’t you contacted us yet?

Give us a call at 817-306-5169 and ask us about how we can save you money on your dream backyard and make you the envy of your neighborhood. While you have us on the phone, ask us about our exclusive new plaster coating, Aqua Bright, that is stain resistant, requires no start up or brushing, and most importantly has a Lifetime Warranty!

Are you thinking about buying a pool? It seems that when you are considering it, everyone wants to give you some sage advice about being a pool owner. Truth is, much of the “common knowledge” about pool ownership is a pure myth. Here are some of the more common ones and why they simply aren’t true.

Installing a Pool Will Ruin Your Yard

Having a pool installed is a construction project. This means that there is going to be heavy equipment and construction workers getting the job done. While there will be some minimal damage to your grass, professionals at Puryear Pools will keep it to a minimum and can help you get your yard looking great again in no time at all.

Owning a Pool Increases Utilities

The pumps, heaters, and lights that make up a great Puryear pool will take some energy to do so. Depending on how much you use your pool, you may see some increase in those bills. When you compare the cost of these rising bills, as well as the pool chemicals, with the cost of a boat, RV, or an expensive vacation, you will find it much cheaper to own a swimming pool. It’s especially cheaper when you consider how much time you have to spend in the pool!

Pools Make It Hard to Sell Your Home

Many people insist that a pool makes your home more difficult to sell in the event you need to move. This is simply untrue. Realtors and banks look at pools as a home improvement that adds value to your home, not takes it away. Many buyers will seek out homes that have pools exclusively. Having a pool will add value in the long run and make your home more attractive to those seeing one with a pool.

Pools Take a lot of Time to Maintain

Depending on how heavily you use your pool, you can expect to spend an hour or two a week maintaining it. This includes cleaning, inspection of the mechanicals and balancing the pool chemistry. Pools can take a lot of maintenance time if you neglect them and don’t keep up on the maintenance, just like anything else in your home. Spending a couple hours doing a little upkeep will ensure that your pool is ready for you and your family to enjoy.

Pools Are Dangerous

A pool is a fun way for families and friends to relax and have fun. As with anything some rules and responsibility are needed to prevent accidents. Lay the ground rules and stick to them for everyone at the pool, and you should have no problem creating a safe environment to relax and enjoy.

The advantages of having your own swimming pool are well known. A pool offers many hours of amusement right in your backyard. It increases your home’s value (in most cases, at least). And, perhaps most importantly, it allows you to enjoy the impressive health benefits of regular swimming.

These are the sorts of perks would-be pool owners fantasize about. But if all that isn’t enough for you, there are also many advantages of owning a swimming pool that aren’t so obvious (at least to non-pool owners). Here are a few benefits of pool ownership that may not have occurred to you.

1. There are fitness benefits for non-swimmers, too

You don’t have to be a swimmer to get a good workout in the pool – in fact, you don’t even have to know how to swim. Walking or jogging in the pool are great, low-impact forms of aquatic exercise that almost anyone can do. Being immersed in water provides extra resistance for the muscles while simultaneously protecting the joints and bones. And, because exercising in the pool is more fun, you’re more likely to stick with the program.

2. You control the cleanliness of your pool

For the cost of a pool, you could take your family to a nearby water park or municipal pool many, many times. Of course, if you did that, sooner or later members of your family would likely come down with illnesses ranging from Athlete’s Foot to E. coli. Granted, a few trips to the public pool aren’t going to kill anyone. Still, as an alternative to owning your own pool, public pools leave a lot to be desired. In one recent stomach-churning study, the CDC found that 58 percent of public pools contained fecal matter. Of course, private residential swimming pools can also be unsanitary if not properly maintained. But with less traffic (and presumably, better hygiene from those using the pool), a backyard pool is far less likely to turn into a breeding ground for germs.

3. It’s good for your mental health

Ever notice how people who live near water seem a lot more laid back than the rest of us? For most people, water is an amazingly effective natural stress reliever. Floating weightlessly in water (or on a pool float) is a comforting, almost womb-like experience that tends to make anxiety dissolve away. Better yet, even being near a pool can have a positive impact on your state of mind. Beautiful surroundings and the soothing sound of water offer the perfect setting for quiet meditation. You can enhance the effect by installing water features and/or building your pool close to the house.

4. You and your family sleep better

Whether you suffer from bouts of insomnia, or just struggle to get your kids to bed on time, a pool can make your life easier. Being in and around a pool causes physical fatigue in a number of ways, which in turn allows you to fall asleep faster and sleep deeper. Swimming, walking, or just goofing off in the pool are all sure fire ways to tire you out. But did you know that just being in the pool can cause fatigue? That’s because, the cool water lowers your body temperature, forcing you to expend energy behind the scenes to balance things out.

5. You see more of your friends and family

Simply put, a swimming pool is a social magnet. It gives friends and neighbors a reason to come over and just hang out. It gives you an excuse to host a party once in awhile, even if you’re not the most outgoing person. And, most importantly for parents and grandparents, it keeps the kids close. In a perfect world, people wouldn’t need an excuse to spend time together. However, the reality is that people get wrapped up in their daily lives and the distractions of ever-present technology. A swimming pool provides that little bit of extra impetus to break from the routine and spend time with others. And best of all, cell phones aren’t invited.

As the leaves start to fall and the temperature starts dropping, we would like to give you a few helpful pool maintenance tips to help you save money and protect your pool.

Tip #1 Change your program settings so your equipment runs during the day. If you have a 9 volt backup battery, now is the time to check and or change it

Tip #2 – Watch and slowly decrease your chlorine production on your salt cell or turn down your chlorine feeder as needed (this does not apply to those of you with a Chemlink unit). Check your Aquapure salt cell system for errors. If the service light is on in the panel box then you have an error that needs to be addressed ASAP. If you are having errors or faults, please contact us at the service department. Before Calling the service department, please right down the 3 digit error code (This will be flashing on your LED screen). Having this will help the service department resolve your problem more quickly.

Tip #3 – If you have a Chlorine pool you will need to shock the pool at a ratio of 1lb per 10000 gallons. Do this once a month if your pool receives a lot of organic debris and once every two months if it does not. (Shock during the evening hours only!) If you have a salt water pool, do not shock unless directed to do so by a service technician.

Tip #4 DO NOT NEGLECT YOUR CHEMISTRY! Test your water chemistry regularly and make the proper adjustments as needed. Take a sample to a 3rd party and have it tested a minimum of every three months.  Your Chemistry level should be maintained as follows: pH=7.2-7.6, Chlorine 1.0-3.0, Total Alkalinity 80-120 ppm, Calcium 200-400 ppm, Conditioner (CY) 40-80 ppm and Salt between 2800-3800 ppm.

Tip #5 – Continue to clean out skimmers, pump baskets and cleaner bags every week. Clean filters and salt cells as needed or every three months (minimum).

Tip #6 – How old is your chemistry test kit? Some of the chemicals in your test kit have a shelf life of only one year. If you need a need a new kit we have Taylor kits available.

Tip #7 – When was the last time you tuned up or rebuilt your cleaner? Cleaners need attention too! We recommend a tune up once a year and a rebuild every other year to keep your cleaner at its best.

Tip #8 – Seal your rock and coping. We use a water based natural stone sealer. If you have precast coping we do not recommend sealing it. If you have water features or flagstone, coping it needs to be sealed at least once a year.

Tip #9 – Get a Surge Protector! As we enter another season with unpredictable weather and thunderstorms we recommend that you protect you system with the installation of a surge protector. They can be installed quickly and cheaply, and will save your equipment in the event of a lightning strike or power surge. The manufacturers warranty is up to $7500.00 protection when this device is installed. Save yourself the hassle of dealing with a home owners claim or expensive repair. Call for details.
